Hiking along the Sidewinder and Ocotillo trails in Phoenix

I managed to get in a hike along the Sidewinder and Ocotillo trails in Phoenix this morning. It was a great morning to be outdoors in the desert. It was cool when I started, with a recently full moon lighting the trail until night yielded to twilight. The balloonists were out in number, with one pilot attempting to impress his passengers by nearly touching the desert floor. There were a few more mountain bikers than usual, and gaggles of old-timers started to gather on the trail once 9 o’clock rolled around.

There are just a few hints of color in the desert right now. A little springtime rain should change that.

The right-of-way rules are often posted, but rarely followed --- at least not by cyclists.

The desert cactus aren't quite ready to bloom yet, but it can't be long now.
